🧩 What’s new in modern Drupal?
Drupal 8, 9, 10 and 11 introduced:
  • Enhanced content creation and editing tools.
  • Recipes, Workspaces and Single Directory Components (Drupal 11).
  • Built-in caching and CSS/JS aggregation for faster pages.
  • Responsive admin screens – manage content on the move.
  • Better integrations with popular web services and APIs.
  • More features moved into core, reducing dependency on contributed modules.

Community support for Drupal 7, 8, 9 and earlier has ended. These versions are out of date and should be considered insecure.

Drupal 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 – what’s the status?

As of 12 November 2025, the timeline for the main Drupal versions is:

  • Drupal 6 community support ended in February 2016.
  • Drupal 7 community support ended on 5 January 2025^.
  • Drupal 8 community support ended on 2 November 2021.
  • Drupal 9 community support ended on 1 November 2023.
  • Drupal 10 community support ends on 9 December 2026.
  • Drupal 11 is the current major version.

“Community support” means the official Drupal development community is actively releasing security and bug-fix updates for Drupal core and many contributed modules. Once this ends, only paid-for extended support is available for a limited period, and not always for every module you may be using. ^Drupal 7 support was reviewed in June 2023 and a final extension was granted to 5 January 2025.

What you should do next

If you’re running Drupal 6 or 7

You should plan an upgrade as soon as possible. These older versions are now well beyond their supported life, so your site is likely to have – or will develop – security vulnerabilities.

Drupal 11 is usually the best target for standard informational and e-commerce websites. However, some of your existing add-on modules may not have Drupal 11 equivalents, so a migration may need careful planning and possibly replacement functionality.

Upgrades from Drupal 6 or 7 can be complex. Your theme (design template) will need major changes to work with a newer version, so this is a good opportunity to choose a brand new, modern and responsive design. We have also successfully converted older themes to work with Drupal 11 as a separately costed project.

If you’re running Drupal 8, 9 or 10

Upgrading from Drupal 8, 9 or 10 to Drupal 11 is generally more straightforward than upgrading from 6 or 7, but it is still important to plan the work:

  • Check which modules you rely on and whether they are compatible with Drupal 11.
  • Review your hosting to ensure it supports the newer PHP and database versions.
  • Plan for testing – especially if you have e-commerce or other complex functionality.

Again, Drupal 11 is usually the recommended destination, but we will always review your specific setup and advise you if there is a better route.

Upgrade / migrate Drupal yourself

The Drupal project provides tools to help you assess and carry out upgrades, including readiness reports and migration tools within Drupal itself. If you are comfortable with technical tasks, following detailed documentation and taking backups, you may decide to use these to complete the upgrade yourself.

However, it can still be a complex and time-consuming process. If you would like experienced help, we can manage the upgrade for you.

Does your site qualify for these indicative prices?

Prices around the guide amounts are usually available if:

  • None of your Drupal core, add-on modules or libraries have been modified from the official versions.
  • You have no custom modules (including modules written just for your site or not available via drupal.org).
  • Your current Drupal core and modules are already up to date within their existing major version (we can quote for this if needed).
  • Data in all custom fields can be migrated.
  • Your site operates in a single language.
  • Your modules have equivalents (same or similar) in the newer version of Drupal, or you are happy for unavailable functionality to be removed.
  • Your chosen new theme does not require layout or code changes beyond its “off-the-shelf” state.
  • You can provide full access to your web hosting, Drupal admin and database.
  • Your hosting meets the system requirements for the new Drupal version – or you would like us to host the upgraded site.

Don’t worry if your site doesn’t meet one or more of these points. We can still review your site and provide a tailored quote.

What about PHP?

Different Drupal versions require different versions of PHP, the language Drupal is built with. If your site is on an older Drupal release, your PHP version may also be very old. When we plan your upgrade, we can usually help you move to a supported PHP version at the same time – provided your hosting supports it.

What if you order a package and your site can’t be upgraded?

If you order a fixed-price upgrade package and your site cannot be upgraded within that package, we guarantee that we will either offer an alternative option where possible, or you will only pay for the website and hosting audit (£45 + VAT).

There are some situations where the services or prices above cannot be offered – for example, if your site has very complex access rules, views, blocks or other settings, or if the content structure is particularly involved. In rare cases, a site cannot be upgraded using our standard process, or at all.

If that applies to your site, we will give you a quote for any additional work needed. If you decide not to go ahead, we will charge only the £45 + VAT audit fee. If you have already paid for a fixed-price package, we will keep just the audit amount and quickly refund the balance.

If you are ordering one of our fixed-price packages, please check that your site meets the requirements above before placing your order.
