Since partnering with Ecologi, we have supported the prevention of 48.91 tCO2e from being emitted through 45 verified carbon avoidance projects. While the most significant impact you can have is by reducing your own emissions, carbon avoidance projects offer complementary climate solutions by preventing greenhouse gas emissions, restoring nature, and supporting local communities. Supporting these projects can offset remaining, unavoidable emissions.

Ecologi only backs projects that are certified by either the Gold Standard or Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). Additional certifications for VCS-certified projects highlight their contribution to sustainable development and the co-benefits they provide to local communities and nature, such as the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard (CCBS) and the Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta). They also use third-party platforms, including the carbon intelligence platform Sylvera, to ensure the projects supported by their community meet the highest standards.

One of the projects we supported in September has achieved total emission reductions in the current monitoring phase of 102,580 tCO₂e. In 2015, Brazil generated approximately 79.9 million tonnes of municipal solid waste, averaging 1.071 kg per person per day. Most of this waste ends up in landfills, where it decomposes and emits methane gas. Methane is around 34 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide and, when released into the atmosphere, has a substantial impact on global warming.

The Macaúbas Landfill Gas Project in Brazil aims to reduce methane emissions from the “Central de Tratamento de Resíduos Macaúbas” landfill in Sabará, Minas Gerais. The project installs active landfill gas (LFG) extraction, flaring, and electricity generation systems, replacing a passive collection system. This prevents methane from entering the atmosphere and generates electricity. It also creates jobs by requiring skilled operators to maintain the machinery, contributing to local income while delivering environmental and energy benefits.

We have also supported, the Matavén REDD+ project which protects 1,150,212 hectares of tropical forest in the Indigenous Reservation of the Matavén Forest. Deforestation has historically represented a large environmental challenge in Colombia and in this region specifically. From 1990 to 2005, around 500,000 hectares of forest was lost in this region.

Over the past decade, this project has successfully prevented emissions that would have occurred without it. To address pressures on local small-scale farmers to deforest the area, the project offers an alternative by employing locals as rangers and promoting sustainable livelihoods that protect the forest.

Nearly 16,000 Indigenous people benefit from co-projects that provide education, healthcare, dental services, sanitation, and food security. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the project delivers significant benefits for local communities and biodiversity conservation. It is certified to Verra’s Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard (CCBS).
